The BTEC Extended Diploma in Dental Technology (QCF) has been developed to:
give education and training for dental technology employees
give opportunities for dental technology employees to achieve a nationally recognised Level 3
vocationally-specific qualification
give part-time and full time learners the opportunity to enter employment in the dental technology sector or to
progress to vocational qualifications such as a Foundation Degree in Dental Technology
give learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes
essential for successful performance in working life

- Medical emergencies, first aid and communication in the dental team
- Dental technology techniques
- Dental anatomy, oral biology and disease
- Basic dental biomaterials science
- Legislation, professionalism and ethics in dentistry
- Dental public health and preventative dentistry
- Removable complete prosthodontics
- Dental radiology and imaging
- Design of fixed prosthodontics
- Complex dental materials science
- Techniques for manufacturing fixed prosthodontics
- Quality assurance in dental technology
- Principles of orthodontic therapy regimes
- Design, manufacture and modification of orthodontic appliances
- Advanced dental technology techniques and procedures
- Work-based learning in dental technology
Entry Requirements
Four GCSE grade C and above including Mathematics and English. Science and Art based qualifications are favoured. Must be employed full time in a dental laboratory for the part time programme.
Delivery & Assessment methods
Delivery is a mixture of theory and practical sessions. Assessment forms include - assignment writing, presentations, leaflet production and practical submissions.
Progression
Academic progression includes - Foundation Degree in Dental Technology (MMU) BSc (Hons) in Dental Technology (MMU) Registration with the General Dental council
