Access to HE Health and Social Care Professions

This course is an Ascentis recognised Access to HE award which gives individuals, with significant experience outside of formal education, the opportunity to enter Higher Education to train for a career in health-related professions.

Course content

Main units studied to Level 3: -Foundations in Health Studies -Theories and Perspectives in Health Studies -Topics and Themes in Health Studies -Practical Skills in Health Studies -Foundations in Health Promotion -Theories and Perspectives in Applied Psychology -Topics and Themes in Care Services and Professional Practice -Practical Skills in Reflective Practice -HE Toolkit Supporting Units to Level 2 -Study Techniques *GCSE Equivalent in English *GCSE Equivalent in Maths *Information Technology

*Students who have certificates which demonstrate that they have achieved English, Science and Maths at ‘O’ Level/GCSE may be exempt from these subjects.

Entry Requirements

The Course is aimed at individuals with significant experience outside of formal education. Entry to the course is through an interview and initial assessment to establish that students will benefit and succeed on to the course. Furthermore, students must be able to demonstrate (at interview) their commitment to the course indicating, for example, how they will achieve excellent attendance and punctuality (90% and above). The course is a Level 3 programme of study and students will be required to spend at least 20 hours per week of independent study time outside of the classroom environment. It is also advisable for students to undertake work experience in a health- related work environment prior to commencing study.

Delivery & Assessment methods

This is a full time programme and learners should be aware that classes can normally be at any time between 9am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. You will be expected to attend for 15 hours per week for the main programme. (*additional hours may be necessary for the study of English and/or Maths). You will have free periods throughout the week which may mean that some days you may start later and/or finish earlier.

Progression

Most students progress to degrees in health-related professions including Nursing and Midwifery.
