The emphasis of this course is very much on the ‘art of photography’ with a creative and experimental approach. Lens and light based media is a form of personal enquiry and expression involving the selection and manipulation of images. Students must use approaches that go beyond mere observation and recording.
The AS Level in Photography is an introduction to the main ideas and practices of this ever-broadening subject. Students will develop a personal style in studio photography, portraiture, and photo-journalism as well as having the opportunity to experiment with processing techniques. This will be achieved through a variety of briefs and use of both digital and dark room approaches. A great deal of emphasis is put on ideas-generation and sketch book work.

Course content

The A Level Programme will introduce students to the fundamentals of Photography: composition, use of colour and light, encouraging personal exploration of these within each of the areas of specialism.

  • Location photography
  • Dark room processing techniques
  • Historical and contextual referencing

Delivery & Assessment methods

Continual coursework assessment throughout the course concluding with a 15-hour practical exam in May.

Progression

A Level in Photography (A2), higher education, apprenticeships or employment.
