Who is this course for? The BTEC Nationals in Applied Science are a suite of qualifications that reflect aspects of employment with science organisations or organisations that use science and enable learners to develop practical scientific skills. These qualifications will appeal to learners who prefer portfolio-based assessment covering a variety of scientific investigations. You must have a genuine interest in and an aptitude for science. What qualifications or experience do I need ? You will require: A Merit in BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science (60 credits) or A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general education equivalent to 5 GCSEs at A*-C including Science, Additional Science, Mathematics and English Language. What will I study ? All students will follow a course equivalent to 60 credits consisting of the 4 Mandatory Units: *Fundamentals of Science (10 credits) *Working in the Science Industry (10 credits) *Scientific Practical Techniques (10 credits) *Using Mathematical Tools in Science (5 credits) and the 3 Optional Units - *Mathematical Calculations for Science (5 credits) *Physiology of Human Body Systems (10 credits) *Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques (10 credits) How will I be assessed ? All units will be assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. To achieve a pass grade for the qualification you must complete and achieve a minimum of pass in all units. Units will be assessed by assignments/projects/execises set and marked by the unit tutors. What qualifications could I achieve ? You will receive a nationally recognised BTEC National Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science specialism Medical Science which is equivalent to 1 GCE A Level grade A*-E. What can the course lead to ? A BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is a free standing qualification. The units achieved on it can be used to contribute towards a further BTEC National Level 3 qualification such as the Level 3 Diploma (120 credits) How do I join the course ? You will need to complete an application form and be interviewed by a member of the course team or other designated interviewer. Will I need an interview ? Yes Are there any extra costs for equipment/materials ? Whilst every attempt is made to keep the costs to the candiate to a minimum, the college reserves the right to charge candidates amounts over and above published fees in response to any additional charges from the awarding body. Candidates will, however, have to purchase a lab coat for use in chemistry practical lessons.
