Media Level 3 Extended Diploma

Choose the Banbury-based Extended Diploma in Media and you can explore a career pathway in the TV and film industry. The course covers the vibrant world of TV and film, also incorporating radio, production, photography, comic book and print production.

You work on a series of individual and group assignments which cover subjects such as:
• creative media production management
• working to a brief in the creative media industries
• understanding the television and film industries
• film and video editing techniques
• multi-camera techniques
• writing for television and video
• television and video studies
• film studies
• factual programme production techniques for television
• corporate and promotional programme production
• music video production
• advertisement production for television
• producing video installation work
• interview techniques for creative media production
• presentation techniques for broadcasting
• soundtrack production for the moving image

Please not that these subjects are subject to change. The course covers functional skills too.

Individual learning targets are set each term and you receive regular feedback on your progress in meeting these targets. Formal assessment is through assignments, projects, presentations and practical assessments, which are set at regular intervals throughout the course. All work for your Extended Diploma is assessed through coursework. The functional skills course in English, maths or ICT is assessed by an external exam.

This extended diploma has strong links to industry, reflected through guest speakers and outside clients. You have full access to our media centre, which consists of a television studio, digital, video and sound editing equipment, a radio studio and computing facilities. You work with specialist tutors on live practical projects.

The qualifications awarded are the Edexcel National Diploma in Media and functional skills qualifications in English, maths or ICT. There is also the opportunity to study A Level Film Studies and GCSE Maths alongside your Extended Diploma.

Applicants for a level 3 programme will normally have:
- at least four GCSEs at grade C or above (including some subjects related to the proposed area of study) and/or a completed level 2 award
- the willingness to study for an additional level 2 qualification in English and/or maths

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an internal assessment. All students will have their literacy and numeracy needs supported within the programme.

The majority of students progress to courses in higher education at either degree or HND level. Many specialise in a particular field. Examples of possible careers are film, camera work, advertising, journalism, public relations, design, media, and photography.

You will improve the wider skills vital for success in further study or employment, including self-confidence, speaking in front of others, working with others, taking responsibility and managing your time. By the end of the course you will have benefited from a valuable insight into future careers open to you.
