Who is the course for?
This is a beginner’s course. This course assumes no prior
knowledge.
What is your approach?
Each session will include: a demonstration and explanation by
the tutor, students will then practise the exercise and individual
feedback will be given. In this relaxed and friendly way students
will progress through a series of exercises, giving them a
foundation of painting skills and terms. Students will be expected
to use the session to practise the skills and build on them as the
week’s progress. Time will be allowed for students to work at their
own pace to gain the skills needed to progress.
One to one feedback will be give during the course.
You will review your own progress through the work produced in your
sketchbook and portfolio.
What can I do next?
If you would like more information about progression
opportunities, please speak to your tutor or other member of

What will I need?
You will need a basic set of paint and brushes to work with
during the first lesson, the tutor will have a few complete sets to
purchase £15, or individual items.
Watercolour paper (thickness over 140lb/300 gsm) I suggest
beginners bring A4 size. Look for a pad that is titled
‘watercolour’ pad if you do not understand the sizes and weights
quoted above. The Works sell a cheap (£1.99-2.99) pad – Crawford
& Black 230gsm
You will need 3 ‘watercolour’ brushes: one large round, one small
round and one square flat brush. (the large round and flat brush
bristles should be about the same size width as the end of your
thumb, the small should be thinner than your little finger.)
A small selection of watercolours: I suggest you buy some little
tubes of paint; one of red, one of yellow and one of blue. There
are a lot to choose from, so just choose those three in the shade
you like best! Some can be expensive, buy the best you can afford.
The Works and WH Smiths also sell a box of inexpensive pai
