What is the course about?The course covers techniques for creating quick and lively
sketches and paintings in a variety of materials.
We will explore what materials ‘travel’ well, how to preserve
artwork and how to make materials more portable.
The content and outcomes of the course will be discussed with you
and may be adapted to meet your needs and those of the group. As a
guide, by the end of the course you should be able to:
Feel more confident about putting pencil or brush (or other
materials) to paper when travelling or working on site.
Create a quick sketch to capture your personal response to a place
or situation.

use a sketchbook on holiday or while travelling, to capture the
moment in a personal way.
What is your approach?
The course will be tutor led with demonstrations, individual
activities and 1:1 support as appropriate.
What can I do next?
You may like to enrol on a project-based course that will allow
you to develop your own ideas using a range of media, or a medium
that you have particularly enjoyed exploring in this one-day
session. Or you could start to practice on your own or with
friends; submit work for national or local exhibition; join a local
art society.
If you would like more information about progression opportunities,
please speak to your tutor or other member of staff.
What will I need?
You will complete an Individual Learning Plan for the day
progress will be reviewed during the day.
What will I need to bring?
Please bring a small sketchbook (the kind you would use on holiday
or to travel with) along with any materials you would like to try
working with. As a minimum these should include a pencil, a fine
pen or biro and some watercolour paints.
Also useful would be scraps of paper that you can use for collage
such as newspaper, pages from magazines or mixed art papers, as
well as a glue stick.
If the weather is good we will be able to work outside, however
please also bring some holiday photos to work from, in the event of
bad weather.
There will be just a 30 minute lunch break so please also remember
to bring a packed lunch.
Are there any other costs?
Other materials will be available from your tutor at cost
price.
