Description

ICT takes user’s perspective of computer systems. The emphasis of this course is placed on developing an appreciation of the importance of information to individuals and organisations and an understanding of how information handling can be enhanced through technology.

The course aims to develop:

  • problem-solving skills through the practical application of ICT.
  • the ability to analyse, appraise and make critical judgments about the use of ICT.
  • an awareness of the role of ICT in the management, manipulation and distribution of information.
  • an awareness of the effects of ICT on individuals, organisations and society.

Course Outline
AS Level

Module 1 – Information Systems

A written paper of two sections. You will produce a spreadsheet to take into the exam and use to answerquestions in section B

Module 2 – Presenting Information
You will undertake desktop publishing and multi-media tasks, presenting the outcome for internal assessment

A Level
Module 3 – Use and Impact of ICT

A written paper of two sections. This will include one long answer question

Module 4 – Relational database project

You will required to analyse, design, implement, test and evaluate a solution to a problem of your choice requiring a relational database.

Lessons involve both taught theory and practical activity. As part of the course, students will be required to complete projects that will involve developing computer systems using applications packages. You will be required to work independently on your assignments and on developing your practical skills outside of lessons. All necessary resources will be provided to support you throughout the course.

There is a clear link to the role of business throughout this course but ICT is suitable to candidates with a variety of backgrounds.
