Description

The demand for highly-qualified practitioners to work with children, young people and their families is rapidly increasing. The need to utilise and develop the skills of current practitioners is vital to the growth and improvement of this rewarding and demanding sector.

The Foundation Degree in Children’s and Young People’s Services has two pathways: We offer two pathways: Early Years or Teaching Assistant. You will study modules that relate to both areas alongside pathway specific modules.
This programme is validated by the University of Derby.

How long is the course?

This programme lasts for two years full-time or three years part-time.

Full-time students will have two days in college, a study day and two work placement days per week (you will be responsible for finding this placement but we will support you if you experience difficulties in this). Part-time students will attend one evening class per week.

You will also need to dedicate a substantial amount of time to research and work outside of the classroom.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods are varied and may include written reports, presentations, case studies, essays and reflective statements. Where modules are work-related, assessment will relate to your own organisation (where appropriate) and/or vocational setting.

What will I study?

The foundation degree consists of 12 modules which currently include:
  • Starting to Study
  • Work-Based Reflective Practice 1 and 2
  • Equality and Diversity
  • The Curriculum 0-19
  • Integrated Services
  • Research Methods and Practice
  • Understanding Behaviour
  • Children, Young People and Family Rights
  • Children's Health and Well-Being
  • Researching Services

Pathway modules include:

  • Early Years Provision and Practice or
  • Role of the Teaching Assistant

Module titles may change.

What does the course lead to?

This course will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and professional skills to take into your career or current role.

What can I go on to study?

You have the opportunity to apply to the third year of an honours degree either in Child and Youth Studies, Early Childhood Studies or Education Studies at the University of Derby, or other top-up programmes at other universities, subject to entry requirements.

On successful completion of an honours degree, you are eligible to progress to teacher training, subject to GCSE passes in English, science and mathematics, if you intend to work within education or progress to Early Years Professional Status.

Completed foundation degrees are worth 240 CATS points in line with the UK universities’ credit accumulated transfer scheme.

Entry requirements

All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss qualifications appropriate to the full and part-time pathways, experience and any other related issues.

To start this course you will be expected to have successfully completed, or have evidence of working towards, at least one of the following:

  • Appropriate A Levels and five GCSEs at grade C or equivalent
  • NVQ Level 3 in a related subject
  • CACHE/BTEC National Diploma in a related subject
  • Other appropriate Level 3 qualification

Please note, literacy at Level 2 is an essential requirement and numeracy at Level 2 is desirable. A grade C or above in GCSE English Language is essential. You will also be required to undertake a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check that you will fund prior to undertaking this course. Certain types of reprimands, cautions and convictions may affect your chances of securing a work placement. If you have any concerns about this, please speak to a member of college staff as soon as possible.
