Aims

The changes brought about by the 2012 Health & Social Care act are due to take effect at the beginning of April, meaning unprecedented change for the NHS. As well as this bill, there have been a number of scandals regarding the care of patients in NHS organisations that have prompted cries for a change in culture.

As many of our armed service personnel are either medically discharged or face redundancy this study day will provide an overview of the health and social care needs of veteran and their families and consider ways in which the local community and health care practitioners can assist to ease the transition to civilian life.

  • Assist in understanding some of the challenges faced in transition to civilian life
  • Consider some practical ways in which the community and health care  professionals can support the armed forces community

Objectives

  • To gain an overview of the armed forces as an organisation; their commitment and their organisational culture.
  • Identifying some of the challenges faced on exit from the service for the veteran and their wider family.
  • Consider some of the existing legislation that impacts on this group
  • Recognise practical ways of supporting the veterans and family.
