Summary
BIM is seen as a revolutionary technology that promises to bring a significant change in how construction happens over a timeline. It has a potential the transform the whole construction process right from the conceptual design to construction through to operations and facilities management. Due to its parametric abilities and ability to provide a central point of understanding in a natural, easy to visualise 3D environment, many new options open up that were not possible before. Although, on its own BIM is a technological solution, it also demands a major process change affecting the whole construction industry, including clients, contractors, designers and major supply chain organisations. BIM is very high on Government’s agenda, where ambitious targets are being set for its implementation on all major projects in coming future. There are also relevant British Standards being introduced to regulate and inform the use of BIM on construction projects.
With a view to these upcoming changes, it becomes highly important for all of Construction industry to understand the implications they will have on their internal and external processes. There is also a great opportunity to assess organisation’s current processes and identify opportunities of improvements by following best practice examples. In order to achieve this and to respond to the Government’s mandatory BIM requirements all organisations should develop a strategy that will guide them throughout the process.
