What can this course lead to?

A range of vocations working with children and families in the early years, teaching, social work, family liaison or children’s centres.

The Early Childhood Studies pathway focuses on working with individuals and groups of children ranging in age from birth to seven years. The pathway is suitable for students who plan to work in a variety of contexts with young children such as baby rooms, nurseries, children's centres and schools.

Selection criteria

200 UCAS Tariff points from a maximum of 3 A levels

Plus: GCSE English Language minimum grade C

Alternate qualifications accepted for entry include:

  • Access to H.E. Diploma (60 credits): Pass must be achieved in all Level 3 subjects
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: MMP OR BTEC Diploma: DM
  • Scottish Highers – 200 points from 4 Highers
  • Irish Leaving Cert. – 200 points from 4 Highers
  • NVQ Level 3 in a related subject will be considered alongside an essay set by the University following application

The scheduling of these modules during the six-year programme will remain as flexible as possible especially since those who are studying part time usually have even more calls on their time. We would aim to devise a programme that suited the individual within the normal constraints of the academic calendar. In addition whenever possible we would encourage part time students to integrate with those on the full time programme so that they feel part of the rest of the student body.

Course summary

This new degree is aimed at people wanting to work with children, young people and families. It covers a wide range of issues affecting children and families in today’s society. Generic modules provide a secure grounding in issues for all professionals working in multi-agency contexts with children and their carers. Pathway specific modules for Early Childhood Studies cover issues such as setting up stimulating learning environments and features of inclusive practice in the early years.
