Credit and UCAS requirements Credit: 20 credits Selection criteriaIn addition to the academic entry requirements students will need to have appropriate clinical experience and access to the supervision and support of an experienced clinical practitioner who will act as their mentor for the duration of the course.
Modules
This module covers:
- Social/psychological influences of communication
- Explanation giving e.g. written information, inter-professional communication – problems and issues
- Theories and definitions of stress and coping
- Counselling skills, breaking bad news, dealing with aggression and assertiveness skills
- Ethics, confidentiality and privacy, patients rights, and medico-legal implications
This module will enable you to:
- Relate and receive complex, sensitive, contentious information and use persuasive, motivational, negotiating and empathic skills and evaluate barriers to the understanding of this information.
- Appraise a number of supportive strategies for patients in their care e.g. counselling skills, breaking bad news, dealing with aggression, and assertiveness with the aim of empowering patients to realise their potential in health care.
- Critically assess the environment in the interest of promoting safety and security.
- Work in partnership with others to develop, take forward and evaluate policy and strategy.
- Evaluate, plan and deliver intervention.
This is a compulsory module for the PGC/PGD and MSc Medical Imaging, Ultrasound programme.
