Entry requirements See course specific entry requirements listed below. Selection criteriaThis course is for engineers, industry researchers, students or for anyone new to MATLAB® wishing to develop their own knowledge. No previous knowledge of MATLAB® is needed.
Course requirements- Basic computer operation skills
- Applicants must have an understanding of mathematics (University Level 4 and 5)
This course is divided into two parts-fundamentals and advanced over five days. You can register for the full course or individual days.
*For the advanced training courses in Days 3, 4 and 5, fundamentals are essential.
Day 1 fundamentals
Quick Start in MATLAB®
General introduction and demons of MATLAB®, including
- Leaning main features of MATLAB®
- Knowing the desktop basics
- Matrices and Arrays
- 2-D and 3-D plots

- Getting help and documentation
Language fundamentals of MATLAB®
Introduce the MATLAB® language basics, including
- Generating matrices and matrices operations
- Numbers, variables and expression
- Arrays and arrays operations
- Entering commands
- Data types and indexing
Day 2 fundamentals
Mathematics Functions of MATLAB®
Introduce basic mathematics application functions, including
- Calculus (limit, diff, int)
- Solving systems of linear equations
- Function handles and Zero finding
- Importing and handling of data
- Polynomial Regression
- General Linear Regression
Graphics Functions of MATLAB®
Introduce basic plotting functions, including
- Creating a plot
- Plotting multiple data sets in one graph
- Choosing line styles and colours
- Plotting lines and Markers
- 3D surface plot
- Exporting Graphics
Day 3 advanced
MATLAB® Programming Method and Skill
Introduce basic MATLAB® program structures and control flow.
- Conditional control (if, else, switch)
- Loop control (for ,while, continue, break)
- Program termination (return)
- programming skills (vectorization)
Introduce two fundamental programming methods: Scripts and Functions.
- Creating a script program
- Writing a function
- Calling a function
- File I/O operations

Day 4 advanced
Simulink and control engineering application
Introduce Simulink system simulation environment, including
- Simulink operation fundamentals
- System simulation models
- System simulation operations
Control Engineering Applications:
- Feedback control
- Laplace transform
- DC motor control: position and speed control (Proportional control, PI control, PID control)
Day 5 advanced
Symbolic Tool Box and MuPad application
Introduce symbolic objects and basic symbolic operation functions, including
- Symbolic constants and definition
- Symbolic variables and definition
- Symbolic calculus (limit, diff, int)
- Solving symbolic equations (solve)
- Series (symsum, taylor)
Introduce interactive symbolic operation application --- Mupad and combination of Mupad & MATLAB® programming.
- Introduction to Mupad
- Basic application of Mupad (diff, int, limit, solve)
- Mupad plot
- Combination of Mupad & MATLAB® programming
- Short introductions and demonstrations (with notes)
- Tutorials – application examples (with tutorial notes and trainer’s support)
- Exercises – application examples (with trainer’s support: to help you to master the skills using MATLAB® for engineering problem solving)
