Graduates following this route will typically need to brush up on their mathematics or may need to reconnect their mathematical subject knowledge to the school curriculum before commencing a Mathematics PGCE. Participants will typically have studied mathematics from an advanced perspective usually demonstrated by a degree with a significant proportion of mathematical or related content. They may benefit from the booster course as some time may have elapsed following completion of advanced study and they need to work on mathematical skills. They may conversely need to access the booster course following recent study of mathematics at an advanced level and would benefit from the booster course in order to refocus upon the subject knowledge needed to teach school mathematics.
What can this course lead to?This course enables you to build your subject knowledge in order to train to teach secondary mathematics. Job opportunities in this subject are very high due to their being a national shortage of teachers in this subject.
Resources and facilitiesWe have several excellent resources to help you excel in your studies. All students have access to our Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment which can provide easy online access to course information, course materials, relevant web links and an online discussion board.
We have a well-stocked library and a Learning Gateway, which offers an interactive, flexible space to study. You can also take advantage of The Learning, Information and Student Services (LISS), which provides learning resources, equipment, student advice, skills training and study space.

Course summaryYou will be encouraged to work actively on mathematics both collaboratively and as individuals. You will particularly be challenged to develop your own understanding of the mathematics in the Key Stage 3 and 4 curriculum by examining concepts from a variety of perspectives and examining misconceptions in learning mathematics. During the face to face days you will be able to explore mathematics including topics from number, algebra, geometry and problem solving in mathematics. You will also be encouraged to start the process of becoming a beginning teacher by reflecting upon the implications of your learning for your classroom practice.
You will also be supported in auditing your subject knowledge and developing appropriate targets for development for the remainder of the course. You will have access to our resources on the virtual learning environment and will be encouraged to engage with this in order to meet your development targets.
Successful completion of the short subject knowledge course will be assessed by a short portfolio task drawing on the work undertaken. Participants will be required to demonstrate progress against individual targets and will be encouraged to set targets for development in their ITE year.
