You will need to attend one of the induction days prior to commencing your first module; these are running in Lancaster on 7 or 8 January 2013 (you only need to attend one date) and in Carlisle on 8 January 2013. If you have studied at the University of Cumbria in the past two years the requirement to attend the induction day may be waived.

The aim of this module is to assist you to analyse and evaluate the principles of leadership and your application to practice.

Intended learning outcomesAt the end of the module the student will be able to:
- Critically reflect on personal knowledge, skills and attributes, particularly communication required for a leadership role
- Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of Leadership and how it differs from and is complementary to management
- Critically discuss different theories and styles of leadership
- Systematically review Leadership from professional, ethical and legal perspectives and reflect upon the implications of health systems, culture and management structures for the development of Leadership
- Analyse the strategies available for achieving change in different situations including the importance of personal and organisational power

Course summaryYou will initially explore the difference between leadership and management in order that the concept is well formed and understood. The module will examine the term leadership from a philosophical, psychological, social, spiritual and ethical stance. Various theories of leadership will be offered for critical analysis and application. The skills necessary for leadership will be covered. The analysis of the power structures and cultures, which are found in the health services, will be explored in order to place leadership in the wider context.
