Aims of the Programme
Our LLM programme is designed for lawyers and non-lawyers to gain an understanding of the legal and regulatory environment and processes in the international energy and resources industries. It is suitable for those aspiring to be practising lawyers, legal advisers, contract managers and negotiators in these industries.
The Centre for Energy, Petrolem and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) achieved a high research rating in the 2008 RAE as part of the submission from the University's Law Unit of Assessment. The Unit finished among the top four in Scotland (out of 11), and among the top 19 out of 67 in the UK. All of its research was classified as being of an international standard.
Programme Content
The LLM is made up of compulsory and elective modules, from a wide range - visit the CEPMLP website to view the full list for a particular specialisation. The taught component is followed by either:
- a dissertation of up to 15,000 words on a topic approved by an academic supervisor, or
- an Internship report - students who choose this option are required to source an organisation willing to offer a 3-month work placement, approved by an academic supervisor, or
- an extended PhD Proposal - students who propose to follow up the LLM with a PhD may, with the approval of an academic supervisor, submit a 10,000 word PhD proposal
Methods of Assessment
Each course is assessed by a combination of examinations and a research paper.
