The professional development course in Writing Short Films will give you an introduction to the principles and processes involved in this form of screenwriting.

It is expected that you will have some basic knowledge and understanding of writing for film or TV.

The aim of the course is to develop your awareness and understanding of short films, both narrative and poetic/experimental; extend the range of techniques that you can bring to your screenwriting; explore some opportunities that the medium offers the screenwriter; and increase your ability to make use of these opportunities. You will encounter screenwriting techniques and possibilities that you may not have previously considered, as well as developing your ability to work with already familiar film storytelling techniques.

Independent study is a vital element of this course and you will be required to read, write and view short films outside the scheduled class times.

In the first half of the course, the focus is on studying and writing short films where story is the defining element. You will develop, pitch and critique ideas for your short drama film script, before writing and rewriting this script. This process will develop your ability to write engaging dramatic characters, structure a short drama film script, write dialogue that creates subtext and advances the story, write for the medium of film and consider and use peer and tutor feedback for the process of re-writing.

The second half of the module introduces experimental/poetic films, and the significance of short film in this tradition. You will consider why screenwriters and filmmakers choose to experiment with aspects of film language and content, and what this creative experimentation involves. You will study some of the key movements that have contributed to the evolving tradition of experimental/avant garde film and examine their use of particular techniques to express their ideas.
