This hands-on practical film making short course is ideal if you are interested in developing your creative skills within the independent film arena. The course concerns the process of making successful short films and focuses on single camera (digital format) script-to-screen production.

The course is about practical film making where you will have the opportunity to combine craft with creativity to produce a short film. The approach recognises and acknowledges the evolving nature of digital film production and the value of collaborative film making. The major project part of the course will focus on the development and production of a five-minute long short original film. You will learn about idea development, story-boarding, pre-production planning requirements, camera operation, direction and editing, whilst working together to a tight schedule.

The course aims to be practice focused and will be based on demonstrations, short lectures, presentations, group working activities and location work. The aim is to create an environment where you can learn whilst taking part in the development of a collaborative creative project. Within an intensive schedule each day will focus on a core production activity.

This is an introductory course so you will be a beginner new to film making or perhaps an enthusiastic amateur film maker. The course will also appeal if you have an interest in screenwriting and are keen to gain an understanding of production skills, or if you are a drama student wanting to experience the other side of the camera. The course can also be used as a practical opportunity to add to your portfolio or showreel and help you to discover in which area your film making interests best lie. You will not be required to supply any materials as the equipment will be supplied. However, you are encouraged to come along with ideas for short films - whilst we cannot always promise that they will all make their way in to the final film they will be a good starting point.

By the end of the course you will have achieved a better understanding of producing effective dramatic storytelling, an enhanced appreciation of the different roles within a production team and an insight into the key aspects of independent digital film production.
