It will give you an understanding of the principles and practical application of health, safety and welfare in line with UK legislation and provide you with the skills and knowledge to recognise, identify, assess and manage risk within the work environment. You will learn about the legal aspects of health and safety including regulations and government legislation, court structures and penalties, duties and responsibilities, policies and objectives as well as the wider issues of the health and safety culture and organisational arrangements.
You will consider health and safety and risk management in the workplace including identification and assessment of risks and hazards and the implementation and maintenance of risk control.
In addition to learning about specific risks you may encounter in the workplace and how to manage them, you will also learn about accident reporting and investigation; monitoring the effectiveness of policy and management systems; and health and safety communications.
You will learn through lectures, tutorials and coursework. You will also carry out practical exercises including inspection of a workplace. You will be assessed on the basis of two 1500 word essays.
