This course is aimed at professionals working in a variety of settings within the health care sector.

It is a practical course in which you will learn a range of core clinical skills, such as indications for specific procedures, observations, measurements and strategies to respond to possible complications.

The procedures you will study include venepuncture, cannulation, urinary catheterisation, wound care, tissue viability assessment, urine testing, blood glucose monitoring, respiratory support, and IV fluid administration. This course is aimed at professionals working in a variety of settings within the health care sector.

It is a practical course in which you will learn a range of core clinical skills, such as indications for specific procedures, observations, measurements and strategies to respond to possible complications.

The procedures you will study include venepuncture, cannulation, urinary catheterisation, wound care, tissue viability assessment, urine testing, blood glucose monitoring, respiratory support, and IV fluid administration. You will also study basic life support and airway management, ECG monitoring and suctioning techniques, as well as strategies for responding to shock, bleeding, raised blood pressure, needle stick injuries and haematoma.

In addition, you will study related subjects, such as the anatomy and physiology of relevant systems, and types of appropriate equipment in relation to skills and procedures. You will also learn about the factors influencing the choice of equipment, such as effectiveness, patient preference, cost, age, weight, gender, anxiety, skin integrity and positioning. Finally, you will develop your knowledge of the protocols and guidelines in relation to skill and awareness of safe practice and preparation of equipment, aseptic technique, patient/client comfort and the importance of checking patient records.

Your learning will enable you to engage in critical reasoning and analysis when planning an intervention. You will also reflect on your wider capacity to learn and benefit from instruction, enhance your team working skills and develop your oral and written communication skills.
