The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) via Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Built Environment specialisms course is aimed at students with a good honours degree (or several year's work experience and professional qualifications) who wish to undertake a research-based doctorate. If you register on the PhD via MPhil you will be able to apply to the Board of Studies for Research Degrees when you have made sufficient progress on the work to provide evidence of the development to PhD. The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) via Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in
Built Environment specialisms course is aimed at students with a

If you register on the PhD via MPhil you will be able to apply to the Board of Studies for Research Degrees when you have made sufficient progress on the work to provide evidence of the development to PhD. Before approving transfer from MPhil to PhD the Board of Studies for Research Degrees shall be satisfied that you have made sufficient progress and that the proposed programme provides a suitable basis for work at PhD standard. A viva voce assessment will normally be used as part of its consideration of the case for transfer.
If registered for the degree of PhD via MPhil, and unable to complete the approved programme of work for a PhD, you may, at any time prior to the submission of the thesis for examination, apply to the Board of Studies for Research Degrees for the registration to revert to that for MPhil.
If you wish to develop research and analytical skills and conduct an original piece of research, this course is appropriate to you. Your research may be applied research or action research, and may be based on your work in industry if you choose to study part-time.
