Who will benefit from the course?
The following workers need asbestos awareness training if they work in or manage buildings which contain asbestos
- general maintenance staff including electricians, plumbers and gas fitters
- painters, decorators, joiners & plasters
- demolition and construction workers and shop-fitters
- roofers, heating and ventilation engineers
- workers who clean gutters to asbestos cement roof sheeting
- telecommunication IT, fire, smoke alarm, security camera and window blind and curtain fitters
- architects, construction project managers, building surveyors, and premises managers
- anyone who supervises groups 1-7 listed above

Summary of course content
The Course content is a defined syllabus as specified by the HSE's Approved Code of Practice "Work with materials containing asbestos." The training should cover the following topics in appropriate detail including both oral and written presentation and practical demonstration as necessary;
- the properties of asbestos and the effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke
- the types, uses, and likely occurrence of asbestos and ACM's (asbestos containing materials) in buildings
- the general procedures to be followed to deal with emergencies , e.g. an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the work place
- how to avoid risks from asbestos, for example building work: no employee should carry out work which disturbs the fabric of a building unless the employer has confirmed that ACM's are absent
