From microscopic electronic devices to super structures like dams, bridges and towers, engineering has a vast scope that touches every area of our lives. This Bachelor of Engineering course is a thorough, general engineering degree course that explores the fundamentals of this creative and analytical subject.
The course covers the range of techniques, concepts and knowledge – from materials and mechanics to design and modelling – required by professional engineers, and provides a firm foundation on which to build a successful engineering career. It also gives you the opportunity to specialise in a number of areas: engineering design, environmental technologies, or energy and sustainability.

Time required and cost
You require 360 credits to complete this course. Time to complete studies can range from 4 to 16 years depending on how many credits are studied each year. Typically 9 hours of study a week equates to 30 credits achieved in a year.
What you pay is based on the number of credits you study in a year and this depends on the modules you choose. Fees for study commencing in academic year 2013/2014:
- £5,124 if you study 120 credits in a year (full-time)
- £2,562 if you study 60 credits in a year
- £1,281 if you study 30 credits in a year.
NB: This course requires you to travel to the UK to attend residential schools. These must be arranged by you and at your cost as these costs are not included in the course fees.

Career impact
On graduation you should be eligible to apply to the Engineering Council for registration as Incorporated Engineer. You might want to carry on with your studies and work towards registration as a Chartered Engineer. There are two routes:
1. The Master of Engineering, this postgraduate qualification
builds on the Bachelor of Engineering and must be completed within
four years of the undergraduate degree. It is accredited as
satisfying the educational requirements for registration as
Chartered Engineer
2. The Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering , leading to the MSc in
Engineering.
Qualified engineers are much in demand for their rigorous approach to problem solving and high level of numeracy. These skills open up a wide range of other career opportunities – for example in management or finance – as well as in engineering itself.

Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements to study this degree. You will however need to be proficient in English, to an IELTS standard of 6.0. If you are unsure you will be able to take a free English test as part of the registration process.
Classification of course
On successful completion of the required number and type of
modules you will be awarded a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
(Open) degree.
Your honours degree will be classified either as first-class
honours, upper second-class honours, lower second-class honours or
third-class honours. The class of degree is determined by the best
grades you achieve in a minimum of 120 and up to 240 credits from
those modules above Level 1.
At least 120 of those credits must come from modules at Level 3.
