To be a horticulture apprentice you have to be of a minimum age of 16, subject to funding and statutory variations. You must be committed and have a keen interest in horticulture. You will need to prove that you have the determination and motivation to succeed.

Horticulture (landscaping) covers the design, planning, creation and maintenance of designed landscapes, both urban and rural and the interior of buildings. It involves everything from the management of sports turf, golf courses, parks and historic gardens to planning of domestic gardens and leisure facilities. The production horticulture industry is all about the growing of produce and plants from small to large scale production. Businesses produce fresh fruit, flowers and vegetables for local, national and international markets.

End Qualification:

- Diploma in Work Based Horticulture (Level 2)
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)
- Functional skills in English and maths at level 1
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

You will be assessed for your potential to achieve the apprenticeship. The assessment will depend upon the level and range of activities you will be undertaking in the workplace.

You may need to undergo an initial assessment of your English and maths skills in which you are required to be working at or towards level 1.

At the start of your apprenticeship you will need to be employed by a suitable and appropriate employer for at least 16 hours a week. You also need to have been a resident in the EU for at least 3 years.

Commitment and motivation are necessary to complete the course.

Assessment:

Portfolio and work based assessments and underpinning knowledge exams. Functional Skills attendance to college required on a weekly basis for approximately 8 weeks (various start dates and nearest campus).

Progression from this course:

You could progress to a level 3 advanced apprenticeship in horticulture.

Course Costs:

There are currently no fees payable by young people on Apprenticeship programmes. Fees may be payable by the employer where the candidate is 19 or older. Details available on request.
