Description

The aim of the course is to introduce the novice to the area of Psychology. The programme takes a modular approach, thus the students can explore various areas of Psychology.

The AS consists of 2 units:

Unit 1
- Cognitive psychology - memory
- Developmental psychology - attachment
- Research Methods - methods and techniques, investigation design, data analysis and presentation.

Unit 2
- Biological psychology - stress
- Social psychology - social influence
- Individual differences - abnormality

The A2 consists of two further units:

Unit 3
- Topics in psychology - biological rhythms and sleep, aggression, eating behaviour (at King's Lynn), relationships (at Isle)

- Psychology in action - media psychology
- Research methods - design investigations, data analysis using statistical methods.

A variety of teaching methods, appropriate to the given task, will be used throughout the programme. All students will be expected to participate fully in all activities.

End Qualification:

Year 1: AS Level Psychology (specification A)
Year 2: A2 Level Psychology (specification A)

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C and above including English at grade B. Due to the scientific nature of the subject, maths is strongly recommended. Students who do not possess this will be given a trial period during which their ability to cope with the scientific aspects of the course will be closely monitored.

Assessment:

AS level - this takes the form of two 1 hour 30 minute written papers to assess unit 1 and unit 2 (structured compulsory questions).

A2 level - this takes the form of a 1 hour 30 minute written paper for unit 3 and a 2 hour written paper for unit 4 (essay questions).

Progression from this course:

On successful completion, students will be fully equipped to progress onto higher education programmes (degree or HNC/HND).

Course Costs:

All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials/resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). However, many students will be eligible for reduced fees and / or financial support towards the costs. Click here for detailed information. It is a recommendation for the course that students purchase a suitable text. Details of required text will be provided upon commencement of programme.
