Description

AS level (year 1)

Module MPC1 - Pure core 1
Consists of approximately 50% of the AS pure core mathematics, and includes algebra, coordinate geometry, differentiation and integration. A calculator is not allowed in this module.

Module MPC2 - Pure core 2
Consists of the remaining 50% of the AS pure core mathematics and assumes knowledge of pure core 1. As well as developing the topics in pure core 1 to a greater level the following are introduced: functions, sequences and series, trigonometry and exponentials and logarithms. A graphics calculator may be used in this module.

This is an introductory module consisting of numerical measures, probability, binomial distribution, estimation and correlation and regression. A graphics calculator may be used in this module.

A2 level (year 2)

Module MPC3 - Pure core 3
Consists of approximately 50% of the A2 pure core mathematics, and develops topics from MPC1 and MPC2 including algebra and functions, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation and integration. Numerical measures are also introduced. A graphics calculator may be used in this module.

Module MPC4 - Pure core 4
Consists of the remaining 50% of the A2 pure core mathematics and assumes knowledge of pure core 1, pure core 2, and pure core 3. Topics from pure core 3 are developed and vectors are introduced. A graphics calculator may be used in this module.

Module MS2B - Statistics 2
Assumes knowledge of statistics 1 and includes discrete random variables, Poisson distribution, continuous random variables, estimation, hypothesis testing and Chi-squared contingency table tests. A graphics calculator may be used in this module.

Students will follow a programme of formal class teaching supported by appropriate texts and computer software.

End Qualification:

Year 1: AS Level Maths (Pure and Statistics)
Year 2: A2 Level Maths (Pure and Statistics)

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

5 GCSEs at grade C or above including GCSE maths (higher tier) at grade B or above.

Assessment:

MPC1 - 16.6% (33.3% of AS), MPC2 16.6% (33.3% of AS)
MS1B - 16.6% (33.3% ofAS), MPC3 - 16.6%
MPC4 - 16.6%, MS2B - 16.6%

Progression from this course:

Students from this course can go on to higher education or employment.

Course Costs:

All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials/resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees).
