Description

The subject aims to cover the basic principles of Chemistry, an outline of the major groups of the periodic table and an introduction to Organic Chemistry. There is a considerable amount of practical work in the course.

Students will follow a programme of class teaching with practical investigations both in groups and as individuals and chemistry workshops. Group discussions and research projects are also included.

End Qualification:

Year 1: AS Level Chemistry.
Year 2: A2 Level Chemistry.

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

5 GCSEs including GCSE science triple certificate at BBB, double certificate at grade BB or GCSE Chemistry at grade B, GCSE English language at grade C and GCSE mathematics at grade B plus 2 others at grade C or above.

Assessment:

Unit 1: 1 hour 30 minute examination in two sections (40% of AS mark 20% total GCE).
Unit 2: 1 hour 30 minute examination in three sections (40% of AS mark 20% total GCE).
Units 4 and 5: 1 hour 40 minute examination in three sections (40% each of A2 mark 20% each total GCE).
Units 3 and 6: Internal assessment of practical skills (20% each of AS/A2 mark 10% each of total GCE).

Course Costs:

All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials/resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). However, many students will be eligible for reduced fees and / or financial support towards the costs. Click here for detailed information.
