- The qualification is also suitable for those who wish to either gain confidence, improve or learn Spanish to expand their language skills
*The NVQ language course is initially available in Spanish Levels 1 and 2. For details about French, German and NVQ Level 3, please contact the Modern Languages Department.
Course Content
Level 1
The Level 1 Award enables students to prove their competence in using predictable language in familiar work situations. This competence covers the four skills of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The aim of the individual units is to enable students to speak/understand/read/write predictable Spanish in the context of familiar work situations such as speaking to clients over the phone, placing orders and greeting visitors.
Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE Level)
The Level 2 Certificate enables students to prove their competence in using routine language in familiar everyday work situations. This covers the four skills of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The aim of the individual units is to enable students to speak/understand/read/write routine Spanish in the context of familiar work situations such as applying for a job, working in a sports centre, hotel or tourist office.
Methods of Teaching and Learning
The courses are tutored by well-qualified and experienced staff working with a French language assistant. Students often work in pairs or small groups as well as being encouraged to show initiative in their private study. Good progress is made by use of the target language in the classroom.
Methods of Assessment
The four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking - are assessed by examination.
Enrichment
There are opportunities throughout the year to go on trips to the cinema, theatre, universities and conferences. Some students choose to go on a work experience placement and there is also the opportunity to take part in a French Exchange.
Resources
The courses are supported by textbooks, CDs, DVDs and a wide variety of authentic material as well as television and radio broadcasts and internet resources. The College’s Virtual Learning Environment Moodle allows students to access pod casts, videos, homework, class work and a wide range of resources prepared and selected by their teachers
Progression
Students combine French with a wide range of other subjects and a foreign language qualification is considered to be a most valuable asset in many vocational areas.
Entry Requirements
Five GCSEs at grade C or above or the equivalent from four subject areas including GCSE English. GCSE French at grade B or above is also essential.
Charges
Students have the opportunity to attend film showings at student rates and attend a French Study Day. Student exchange visits cost in the region of £400. (Halsbury. Work experience) Bristol Bordeaux exchange or St Brendan’s French Exchange.
