Advanced Subsidiary (AS)
At AS, this specification will enable candidates to develop integrated literary and linguistic analysis. Set texts will be analysed using appropriate terminology. Students will develop their writing skills. The AS specification has 2 units:
Unit 1: Integrated Analysis and Text Production
- Analytical Question focuses on the use of language and style to develop and explore issues within the text
- Production task addresses central issues within the text such as theme, attitude, language and idiom; candidates are asked to adopt a different style or voice.

Unit 2: Analysing Speech and its Representation
- Features of Spoken English. Transcribed examples of speech from a literary or non-literary context will be compared to discuss how form and context can help shape meaning
- Speech Representation within the context of set text analysis will focus on speech, style and linguistic issues.
Advanced Level (A2)
At A2, the specification includes coursework as a means of developing integrated literary and linguistic analysis.. The A2 specification has 2 units:
Unit 3: Comparative Analysis and Text Adaptation
- Developing questions to consider challenging comparative issues on two set texts selected from poetry and a range including prose and drama
- Creation of drafting processes in preparation for the coursework task.
Unit 4: Comparative Analysis Through Independent Study
- Integration of literary and linguistic study, exploring the way that unseen tasks can be analysed and compared through a variety of approaches
- Developing production skills by focusing on non-fiction writing.
Methods of Teaching and Learning
The course encourages an active, varied and experimental approach to textual study including discussions, presentations, surveys and work with computers. It develops skills of reading, writing and analysing texts. This is a course for students who love to read and write.
Enrichment
Theatre visits, visiting speakers and other enrichment options are possible
Methods of Assessment
All units in the AS year are assessed by written examination. At A2 one unit is assessed by written examination and one by coursework.
Resources
Students work from booklets, worksheets and textbooks. DVDs, computers and other IT facilities support the teaching and learning.
Progression
English Language and Literature combines well with a wide range of other subjects. Through it you are offering evidence of high quality communication skills and an ability to be creative and analytical. These skills are widely transferable and make you marketable for higher education and employment.
Entry Requirements
You will need five GCSE passes at grades C or above or the equivalent from 4 subject areas including GCSE English.
Charges
The books you study will be provided to you free of charge for your use through the course. There are no specific course charges, but you could expect to spend up to £50 per year on stationery, equipment and educational visit.
