Whatever area you specialise in the course is for creative people who are highly motivated and passionate about wanting to create their own work. You will be inquisitive about things around you, willing to challenge accepted norms and will seek to invent and explore your own ideas. As you explore ideas you will be prepared to take risks and be stimulated by problem solving.

What will I do on the course?

You will learn about the different disciplines that constitute art and design with hands on experience of a range of techniques and processes relating to these different areas. You will be able to explore the creative process through the research and analysis of ideas and information, by experimentation with materials and techniques and through the development and realization of creative ideas. You will receive continuous feedback and participate in individual and group tutorials. You will be able to evaluate your own and the work of others and be able to develop and present a unique and personalised body of your own work. The course is organised into three progressive stages: STAGE 1 provides a broad introduction to the different disciplines that make up art and design. These are:
  • Printmaking
  • Painting
  • Photography
  • 3D Design
  • Sculpture
  • Textiles/Fashion
  • Graphic Design
  • Contextual Studies
  • Visual Studies
STAGE 2 you will elect to specialise in one area and develop ideas in depth in response to a common brief. You will be able to test out your chosen subject and develop your experience and confidence within this area, while building up a body of work for your application onto a higher course. STAGE 3 will consist of your doing a Final Major Project. This will be self directed and will go towards an end of course exhibition, and from which you will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction.

What qualifications do I need?

  • 2 A Levels
Please note that you will be advised at interview which of the subjects out of English or Maths are compulsory for inclusion on this course or
  • Extended Diploma in Art and Design
  • A portfolio of work, as all students will be interviewed and offered a place based on this work
  • For mature students (over 21) formal qualifications may be waived if they can demonstrate an aptitude for the subject

Please note that students may be required to purchase small items of personal equipment (such as art materials and paper) during the course. Prices and details will be available from your course tutor near the start of the course.
