Cisco Certified Network Associate (Part Time)

The Cisco CCNA® Exploration curriculum provides a comprehensive overview of networking; from fundamentals to advanced applications and services. It is based on a top-down approach to networking. This course emphasizes theoretical concepts and practical application, while providing opportunities for students to gain the skills and hands-on experience needed to design, install, operate, and maintain networks.
CCNA Exploration offers in-depth theory, challenging labs, and a detailed overview of protocol operations. The course helps students prepare for successful IT careers in small-to-medium businesses, as well as enterprise and service provider environments.

Course content

Exploration 1: Network Fundamentals

• Build a simple Ethernet network using routers and switches
• Employ basic cabling and network designs to connect devices
• Design, calculate, and apply IP addressing schemes and subnet masks.

Exploration 2: Routing Protocols and Concepts

• Configure and verify operation of routers and their interfaces
• Demonstrate understanding of configuration skills with various routing protocols
• Design and implement a classless IP addressing scheme for a network.

Exploration 3: LAN Switching and Wireless

• Interpret network diagrams
• Manage IOS images and configuration files
• Perform and verify switch configuration tasks including remote access management and port security functions
• Perform and verity initial switch configuration tasks.

Exploration 4: Accessing the WAN

• Troubleshooting WAN implementation issues
• Configure and verify a PPP connection between Cisco routers, and Frame Relay on Cisco routers
• Configure, verify, and troubleshoot DHCP and NAT operation on a router
• Router security of Access Control Lists.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a mixture of online assessments, practical laboratory testing and student performance.

The programme is a comprehensive e-learning programme which provides students with the internet technology skills essential in a global economy.

Attendance

There are two options available for the CCNA course:

1. Part-time (half days) - Tuesday afternoons 1pm - 4.30pm
   The course is split into four units, each taught over seven or eight weeks. Each unit is stand-alone, and you will be expected to contribute about five hours of private study per week. The total duration of this course is 30 weeks, with the course starting in September of each year.
2. Part-time (evenings) - Tuesdays 5.30pm - 8.30pm
   The course is split into four units, each taught over 10 weeks. Each unit is stand-alone and takes 10 weeks to complete. In addition, you will be expected to contribute about five hours of private study per week. The total duration of this course is 40 weeks, and the course starts in September of each year.
