This course is for people working towards careers as researchers or practitioners delivering a full range of sport and exercise science services to the industry. The course provides core academic, research and practitioner skills, alongside specialist skills in • biomechanics and performance analysis • physiology and nutrition • psychology • strength and conditioning, in accordance with your own interests.

We offer a first class suite of research and teaching laboratories along side world class facilities offered by our partnership venue at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield. Our laboratories are all British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) accredited.

This course is for people working towards careers as researchers or practitioners delivering a full range of sport and exercise science services to the industry. The course provides core academic, research and practitioner skills, alongside specialist skills in • biomechanics and performance analysis • physiology and nutrition • psychology • strength and conditioning, in accordance with your own interests.

We offer a first class suite of research and teaching laboratories along side world class facilities offered by our partnership venue at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield. Our laboratories are all British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) accredited.

Many of the teaching staff support athletes on a daily basis as part of their work in the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science (CSES) . The team for sport performance have worked successfully with elite athletes competing at the Olympics, Paralympics, and Winter Olympics.

They have, or are currently providing sport science research and consultancy services at elite level for the • Amateur Boxing Association • Amateur Swimming Association (diving and swimming) • British Cycling • British Speed Skating Association • British Skeleton-Bob Team • English Bowls Association • English Golf Union • Royal Yachting Association. The GB table tennis and GB volleyball teams are being supported specifically in preparation for London 2012.

CSES is also heavily involved with the non-competitive exerciser and has grant-funded projects in a range of disciplines including
• physiology, the effects of upper and lower body exercise on intermittent claudication
• psychology, the effects of exercise on breast cancer survivors
• biomechanics, factors that increase susceptibility to injury

As a student you benefit from CSES' activities by our continuous updating of course content based on our knowledge and experience of sport and exercise science delivery. An internship programme is available to develop experience of working in multidisciplinary teams, supporting athletes and coaches as well as addressing topics such as athlete mentoring which are not traditionally taught as part of a degree.

The course enables you to
• develop your understanding of science
• develop your ability to apply theory to practice in sport and exercise
• work towards BASES accreditation
• conduct independent research
• gain experience as a sport or exercise science consultant

Major themes include
• biomechanics and performance analysis – measurement, performance, reducing injury, motor learning and motor control
• physiology and nutrition – instrumentation and measurement, assessment of training and performance, health and exercise, applied sports nutrition
• psychology – motor learning and motor control, sport psychology, exercise and health psychology, applied sport psychology
• strength and conditioning – muscle function and mechanics, measurement, training and performance
• research methods – principles of research design and evidence-based practice
• scientific support – delivering evidence based practice in a multi-disciplinary team

The quality of our provision was rated 24/24 by the Higher Education Council.
