What is Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status?
This subject leads to an honours degree and the professional qualification of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) equipping you with the standards required and the necessary subject knowledge and skills to teach 5 - 11 year olds in primary schools.

This course

Train for a career as a creative and reflective primary teacher on a course that’s offered in partnership with local and regional primary schools. You are trained by staff who work closely with schools, who are involved in national developments in primary education and are authors of key primary education textbooks. This means your coursework is based on the latest research and policy developments in primary education, preparing you effectively for tomorrow’s teaching jobs.

In the first year we introduce you to all the subjects in the curriculum and you develop your understanding of how children learn. You are in school throughout the first year and focus on the development of children.

During your second and third years you consider more complex features of creative teaching and current issues including • providing for children with special educational needs
• cross-curricular teaching
• assessment for learning
• policy and practice in primary education

We encourage you to develop a critical perspective on the changing nature of the primary curriculum.

In the second year you also choose to develop an area of interest such as special educational needs, mathematics or a placement in a different education system.

We offer the course in partnership with local and regional primary schools where you spend your work placements. We have strong partnerships with schools where we work together to deliver the high quality school based training placements.

On this course, you have a significant amount of one to one support from your personal academic tutor and we use the latest developments in e-learning to support face- to- face teaching.

Most teaching takes place in small groups and there is a balance between practical activity and academic work.
