Emergency Rescue and Recovery of Casualties from a Confined Space

Course Aims:

To cover the duties of the rescue team in establishing the emergency arrangements
To cover the duties of the rescue team in implementing the emergency arrangements

Overview:

At the end of this course students should be able to:

• Determine emergency equipment required to deal with incidents identified under the emergency arrangements
• Establish area in vicinity of point of entry to confined space for setting up/storing all relevant rescue equipment
• Ensure that all rescue and associated equipment is operational
• Follow correct procedures in preparation for wearing open circuit breathing apparatus in the event of an emergency
• Enter and exit confined space safely with correct rescue equipment
• Work effectively as a member of the rescue team
• Deal with the emergency situation in accordance with the details specified in the emergency arrangements
• Ensure any used equipment is clearly identified for service and/or serviced

Module 1 - Preparing to work safely in confined space under emergency conditions

1. Determine emergency equipment required to deal with incidents identified under the emergency arrangements

Module 2 - Final checks on equipment in preparation for rescue entry

• Demonstrate correct checks on equipment provided for rescue
• Demonstrate correct checks on self-contained open circuit breathing
• Onset of emergency

Module 3 - Operational procedures for rescue team

1. Confirm that communication systems are operational prior to entry
2. Determine environmental conditions within the confined space
3. Follow appropriate search and rescue techniques to locate personnel within the confined space
4. Administer relevant first aid treatment in preparation for evacuating a casualty from the confined space

Module 4 - Securing the confined space

• Demonstrate safe transfer of casualty onto medical services
• Maintain security around confined space
• Account for all rescue equipment used by team
• Used equipment to be serviced/isolated for servicing
• Complete appropriate reports/records
• Team duties outside vessel
