Course overview

China, now the world's second-largest economy, is widely predicted to become the largest over the next decade. It has undergone a remarkable transition in the past 30 years, from a centrally planned economy to a more market-oriented one.

As the world economic order changes, international business managers need a broad view of the complexities of global business, together with understanding of Chinese business, politics, society and culture, and the language skills to do business effectively.

The BA (Hons) International Business & Chinese Studies will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills for success as a future business leader, strategist and decision-maker in the Chinese market and on the wider global stage.

In-depth study of Mandarin Chinese is a significant feature of the programme, combined with study abroad. In addition to your academic studies in London, you will spend two semesters studying in China.  You will also complete significant periods of work experience in China or a Chinese business setting.

Programme structure

Joint honours degree

This is a joint honours degree, allowing you to study across two disciplines to degree level while acquiring a broader range of skills than is typically possible within a single honours degree.

The BA (Hons) International Business & Chinese Studies is structured in three main parts:

  • In Semesters 1, 2, 3 and 4 you will study entirely at EBSL
  • Semesters 5 and 6 are spent away from the College on your Study Period Abroad (SPA) in China
  • In Semesters 7 and 8 you will return to EBSL to complete your degree

Language study

Language and cross-cultural study are key elements of the programme*. You will develop fluent Chinese speaking, writing and translating skills, with a particular focus on language for business.

* Please note: We accept Chinese language students at beginner to advanced level, but native Chinese speakers are not eligible for this programme.

Study in China

You will spend two semesters living and studying in China at our partner institutions, allowing you to perfect your language skills and gain real experience of everyday life in Chinese communities.

Work experience

Classroom study at EBSL is combined with practical opportunity. All undergraduate students complete a minimum of 30 weeks of work experience during the duration of the course, which offers hands-on experience in international business organisations.

For BA (Hons) International Business & Chinese Studies students, at least 10 of these weeks must be undertaken in China or in companies doing business with China.  Regent’s College will guarantee one work placement in China for all students on this programme, Chinese visas permitting.
