introduction to the world of IT, allowing you to develop your

The BTEC Diploma in IT will provide you with the understanding,
skills and knowledge needed to prepare you for either entering
employment or moving on to further studies. You will learn how to
come up with creative solutions and how to plan and deliver
successful IT projects.
This course offers students the opportunity to study a range of
subjects including computer systems, which introduces you to the
basic hardware and software components that make up computer
systems, and lets you carry out basic installation and
configuration.
Another topic covered is software design and development, which
covers software development process and the features of programming
languages, and lets you use design tools to develop software
solutions. Computer Hardware develops your knowledge, understanding
and skills in the installation of hardware components in a computer
system, and Databases covers database systems as well as the
practical skills to translate that understanding into the design
and creation of databases. You will also study spreadsheets and
learn about their uses, and how to develop, test and document
spreadsheet models.
Networking covers the role of IT networks in organisations
including their features services and components, and teaches you
to set up a small network for personal or commercial use. Web
Development teaches you how websites function and their purpose as
business tools, and lets you design and publish a multiple page
website. You will also research, plan and complete an individual
project.
The course also includes modules to develop your Functional Skills
in English and Maths.
The BTEC Diploma in IT is not an exam-based course. Instead
assessment is through coursework. You will study real-life
work-based case studies and complete projects and assessments on an
ongoing basis. This will allow you to analyse and improve your own
performance throughout the course in much the same way as you would
in a real workplace. Typically you will be working on several
assignments on different topics at the same time so good time
management is important.
You will develop IT teamwork, creative thinking and other skills you will need in life and work. The knowledge and skills learned will allow you to continue your education or pursue a career in IT.
Four GCSEs grade D or above, including English Language and Maths, or a Foundation Diploma with Functional Skills at Level 1. All applicants will be interviewed and must show the maturity and self-motivation to cope with the course and a career in the world of IT. In exceptional circumstances students may be admitted with lower qualifications.
You could progress to a relevant Level 3 course such as the ICT Practitioners BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary/Extended Diploma or A levels. You could also move directly into employment in the IT industry. Many students continue their studies on a part-time basis alongside work.
