years of the courses are the same. If you follow the counselling
route, you will go on to complete a 15,000 word dissertation
demonstrating your integration of the practice of counselling and
TA theory and practice. If you follow the Psychotherapy route, you
will be required to work for two years to comply with the
professional requirements of the Institute of Transactional
Analysis and the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)
followed by Certified Transactional Analysis (CTA) professional
examination. Finally, to complete the MSc, you will present a
masters project based on the written CTA exam.
These courses will enable you to:
- integrate the main areas of TA theory and methodology;
- demonstrate a critical in-depth knowledge of counselling and
psychotherapy and of specialist practice areas informed by current
research and theoretical debate;
- synthesise and integrate findings from clinical practice with
established and emerging knowledge within the counselling and
psychotherapy fields, and
- critically debate, use and justify relevant theories, principles,
concepts and philosophy in counselling and
psychotherapy.

Teaching, learning and assessment: You will benefit from a wide
range of learning and teaching methods, including experimental
group work, facilitated and self-directed learning, observed
supervised-skills practice and tutorials. You are also expected to
find practice placements, which will be supervised, and at a
suitable time start private practice. Assessment includes essays,
case studies, presentations and transcript analysis.
Teaching hours and attendance: Each module which you study
on-campus will require you to attend classes and carry out
independent work. Your attendance requirements at QMU will depend
on which module you are studying.
Links with industry/professional bodies: Both MSc courses have been
written to ensure academic qualification and eligibility for
recognition as a professional practitioner. If you obtain the
Counselling qualification, you will be eligible to apply for
accreditation as a professional counsellor with COSCA (or
equivalent) subject to completion of COSCAs practice requirements.
On completion of the Psychotherapy qualification, you are eligible
for registration as a psychotherapist with the United Kingdom
Council for Psychotherapy. All Physis courses are kept under review
to ensure that both the professional and academic standards
required will be fully met by our graduates.
