The Programme

An exciting opportunity to study current issues related to the expanding sector of health and social care. This is the largest employment field in the South West region and the foundation degree has close links with local employment trends. Health care and social care share a common core of values, skill base and underpinning knowledge that is reflected in this programme of study.

The Programme Content

Stage 1 of the programme introduces appropriate professional skills including communication and developing graduate skills as well as knowledge related to social change, health and social care legislation, social policy, lifespan development and understanding health and social care organisations. In Stage 2 students build on this knowledge and are encouraged to develop skills as independent learners, studying issues of equality and managing resources as well as carrying out a work based project and studies of professional practise.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are normally required to have English and Maths at GCSE or equivalent and a minimum of 80 UCAS points (with one A2 if from A Levels) or an equivalent qualification. However, mature applicants will be considered on an individual basis; they must be able to demonstrate academic ability, motivation and relevant experience. It is also a requirement that applicants demonstrate their suitability to work with vulnerable people.

Costs

An enhanced search with the Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) will be done for each prospective student and there will be a charge for this. Please discuss this on application. Students will be required to purchase their own USB memory sticks and will need to purchase their own texts for the course.

Dates

Part time students attend college on Tuesdays in year one, Wednesdays in year two and Thursdays in year three. Full time students attend college on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in year one and Wednesdays and Thursdays in year two.

Progression

Foundation degrees stand alone as a qualification in their own right, but there are a number of routes open to you once you have successfully completed the foundation degree programme. For example, you could:
- Use it to further your existing career
- Start a new career pathway in the health and social care sector
- Continue onto the Stage 3 Honours Degree at Plymouth University or Somerset College
- Apply to continue your studies on another related programme
