The Programme

The qualification covers electrical, electronic, and mechanical
studies related to the industrial and service sectors - giving an
invaluable insight into the key engineering skills demanded by
employers and higher education. The Diploma in Engineering in the
first year typically will be; Health and Safety in the Engineering
Workplace; Mechanical Principles and Applications; Electrical and
Electronic Principles; Mathematics for Engineering Technicians;
Engineering Drawing for Technicians; Engineering Design; Properties
and Applications of Engineering Materials; Electro, Pneumatic and
Hydraulic Systems and Devices.
The Programme Content
The main programme of the Extended Diploma in Engineering the will be supplemented by up to three Functional Skills. This programme is focused on the development of budding engineers. It will give you an opportunity to look at a number of fields of study across engineering and technology, this will allow you to find the career path of your dreams. If you are prepared to develop new skills and apply then in different situations then you will, on completion, be an attractive candidate for either an Apprenticeship or higher education.
Entry Requirements
To gain entry to the course you will need to have achieved five
GCSEs at grade C or above, which must include Maths, English and
Science. All prospective candidates will be interviewed as part of
the entry process. We will take each case on its own merits as you
may have other valuable qualities such as experience, which we can
take into account. So if your grades are not what they should be or
you have been out of education for a while, be positive and
apply.

Progression
This course is ideal for progression to Apprenticeships, employment or higher education. Past students have gone onto university at Plymouth, Manchester, Cardiff and Swansea to study engineering, electronics, civil and motor sports. Some have studied the Higher National Certificate and Foundation Degree here at Petroc in Electronics and Communications or Mechanical Design and Manufacture. In addition, it is possible to transfer onto an Engineering Apprenticeship and continue your studies part time whilst working within an engineering company.
