The Programme
This programme gives students an insight into childcare and early years with the focus on children from birth to 16 years. There are opportunities within this course for students to experience work placement in a childcare setting with age ranges 0-3, 3-5, 8-12 or 12-16. The course balances knowledge of child development and health and safety alongside practical skills such as play activities and meeting the child's physical needs. In the first year there are two modules covering 'Child Development' (which has an examinable component) and 'Play in Early Years Settings' while second year modules look at 'Meeting Children's Physical Development and Health Needs', 'Health and Safety Practice in Early Years Settings' and 'Working in Collaboration with Parents, Colleagues and other Professionals'.

This is an excellent insight into Childcare and Early Years and is really beneficial to all students who hope to work with children or young people in the future.
Entry Requirements
Five GCSEs at grade C or above. Ideally this will include English and Maths and also depend on other subjects you are hoping to study at this time. You will need to have an acceptable Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check and complete a Fitness to Train questionnaire at interview.
Costs
Travel costs to and from work experience placement, appropriate clothing, a memory stick, printing costs and appropriate text books. You will have to pay for an enhanced CRB check, please see CRB Checks information below.

Progression
Along with other A Levels this qualification can help to gain a place on the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies here at Petroc or many students choose to become Primary/Secondary school teachers or go into other careers such as nursing, midwifery or social care.

DBS Checks
