Biology A Level is a challenging and stimulating course which develops understanding of biological principles through the study of a wide range of topics, from disease to ecology and gene technology. Investigative skills are emphasised and you will need to be able to think critically. Biological advances are often in the news, and we explore the ethical, moral and social implications of some of these. It combines well with Chemistry, Psychology, Geography, Environmental Science and Sport Science In the first term you will study elements of human physiology in relation to disease. This will involve understanding of cell structure and biochemical molecules. In the second half of the AS Level year you will look at the causes of biological variation, including DNA and the ways in which different species of organisms have adapted to their environment over time. The first term of A2 Level Biology looks at populations and environment, including the transfer of energy through ecosystems. After Christmas in this year, you will study control and co-ordination of physiological processes in organisms, including genetic control and its manipulation using technology. Both AS and A2 Level years have exams in January and May/June; there are also investigative coursework assignments in each year.
