After six years of negotiations the European Parliament has approved proposals extending ‘equal treatment’ to agency workers after twelve weeks of employment. With the world now in the midst of a recession, employers are now re-evaluating staff levels and looking closely at labour expenditure. Accounting for 1.4 million or 4.5% of Britain’s workforce, temporary workers provide organisations with a unique flexibility and an essential resource as employers attempt to fill a skills gap without recruiting permanent staff. So, what effect will the Agency Workers Directive (AWD) have on all parties’ involved?
