When does the course start?Induction begins on the first Monday of Welcome Week. See the academic calendar for term dates.
What will I study?The degree prepares you to teach all of the following material areas:
- Food Technology
- Textiles Technology
- Electronics / Systems and Control
- Resistant Materials.
At the end of your first year you will begin to specialise in one of these areas to qualify you to teach it to GCSE and A-level standard.
How will I study?Although you will work on projects focussed on individual areas, there will also be over-arching integrated projects that will stretch your ability to work across materials and engage in the whole designing and making process. You will have the opportunity to showcase your skills at an End of Year Show.
Modules
- Mainly Designing: Foster the creative thinking skills required to develop high quality contemporary design solutions in the school context.
- Mainly Making: Develop an awareness of a range of materials, components, techniques and processes used in the design and manufacture of products.
- Design and Technology in Education and Society: Explore the fundamental concepts of education and the range of skills you will need within the classroom.
- Designing and Making: Integrate the skill and knowledge from the other modules within individual and group projects.
Lectures and workshops build your subject knowledge and understanding, while tutorials and seminars provide the opportunity to discuss issues and ideas arising from your studies. We also use a variety of technology enhanced learning approaches such as wikis, social networks and web 2.0 technologies to support your learning and prepare you for teaching in a modern school.
We will ensure your subject knowledge is based in real-world contexts by using guest speakers; case studies; project work and asking you to reflect upon your learning and work-based experiences.

Contact hoursIn your first year, you will spend an average of six hours a week in:
- lectures
- seminars
- tutorials
You will also spend between two and three hours in practical and supervised sessions. Lectures will build your subject knowledge and understanding, while tutorials and seminars provide the opportunity to discuss issues and ideas arising from your studies. The bulk of your time will be spent on independent practical work and study.
Placements and professional practiceThroughout your course you will have extensive periods of professional practice, working in schools. Read more about this on the Placements tab.
Professional accreditationWe are accredited by the UK Government's National College for Teaching and Leadership (formerly known as the Teaching Agency) as a providers of Initial Teacher Training courses. Once you successfully complete your course, you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This means you can be employed as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) in a school to complete your induction year. Once your induction is completed you can claim Qualified Teacher Status.

You will be based in the Maudslay building on the City site.
We share the Maudslay building with Product Design and Engineering courses meaning you benefit from industry-standard workshops and equipment, taking that knowledge and training into the classroom.
You will work in purpose-built workshops, kitchens and IT suites. View 360 panoramas of the following workshops and teaching rooms:
