During the course you will be encouraged to work from observation and imagination. You will be painting in the art school atmosphere, with the opportunity to engage with the basic handling of paint and processes through a selection of tried and tested exercises. You will be encouraged to look closely and respond to your own environment and cultural experiences when creating your work. Various brushes and paints will be sampled for mark-making and exploring techniques to enhance your painting ability.
While ostensibly a practical course the subject is underpinned by theory and art historical references. The course introduction will include a brief overview of the tradition of painting. However, the focus will soon shift to contemporary uses of paint and artists using this medium will be explored and researched.
To get the most from this course you will be asked to source images and inspiration in advance to help you identify your own potential subject matter. By the end of the course you will leave with new ideas, a portfolio of finished work and work in progress, and new technical skills to aid the continuation of your practice.
