There are 60 places in total across the sandwich and full-time routes.

What will I study?

Throughout your course you will familiarise yourself with the principals of design related to architectures and interiors. The projects will be based upon real sites and, where possible, client focussed.

Year One modules:

  • IAD Design Studio One
  • Design Communication
  • Technical Studies One
  • Interior Architecture in Context One.

Year Two modules:

  • IAD Design Studio Two
  • Professional Studies
  • Technical Studies Two
  • Interior Architecture in Context Two.

Year Three: Optional work placement year
The third year work placement option is spent in working in industry gaining relevant and valuable experience.

Final year modules:

  • IAD Design Studio Three
  • Technical Studies Three
  • Research project.

How will I learn?

You will learn through a mix of formal lectures, supported by smaller group sessions including:

  • seminars
  • tutorials
  • workshops.

The study group tutorials are structured to replicate team meetings often found in design practices. You will also be involved in self-directed project work.

Your class contact time is approximately ten hours per week. The self-directed independent study taken outside of timetabled sessions is spent:

  • preparing for lectures
  • undertaking research
  • completing coursework
  • developing your portfolio and undertaking directed reading to expand your knowledge.
Trips and study visits

Our fieldwork and site visits are popular aspects of this course. Recent trips have included visits to Manchester and an overseas visit to Switzerland or Berlin. These will help you understand and apply what you've learnt in a real world context.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a mix of coursework and practical methods. The coursework will make up the majority of your assessment and will consist of:

  • group and individual projects
  • reports
  • presentations
  • essays
  • a portfolio.
Is the course professionally accredited?

Our BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design course is accredited by the Chartered Society of Designers (CSD) which formally recognises excellence in both design teaching and study. The accreditation is given to courses which clearly prepare and develop students to practice design at the highest, professional standards.

Accreditation offers students discounted CSD student membership whilst learning for all CSD Accredited and CSD Recognised Awards. Automatic entry at Associate Member level (Assoc.CSD) on successful completion of a CSD Accredited course with NO application fee. Continued access to discounted CSD student membership and its benefits for one year on successful completion of a CSD Recognised course.

Degree Shows

In your final year, you will exhibit your work as part of our Degree Shows at the University. The Degree shows include all final year students across NTU's Art and Design-based courses, and are a great platform for you to celebrate your studies and showcase your work to members of the creative industries.

Students on this course also get the opportunity to be selected to exhibit their work at Free Range in London. Along with other Interior Architecture and Design graduates from across the UK, you will present your work to industry and be in with a chance of winning a prize or gaining employment.

Our Interior Architecture and Design team is made up of experienced academics and staff who have recently joined from industry. These, together with regular visiting experts, provide a rounded, up-to-date education, informed by current practice and industry developments.

Where will I study?

You will study on the City site. Most of your lectures will be taught in the recently renovated Newton building. You will also work in the Maudslay building for some of the practical sessions, such as the model making studio.

The majority of your lectures and seminars will take place in the Newton building, which has recently undergone a major renovation making it a great environment to study in.

State-of-the-art Heliodon

This fantastic kit accurately demonstrates the motion of the sun, aiding the design of solar responsive architecture and spaces.

Model making studio

You will also benefit from model making studios in the Maudslay building. This will enable you to develop your skills in a dedicated studio space with technical supervision on-hand.

Dedicated resource centre

This centre is based in the Maudslay building. You will be able to undertake private study in a facility equipped with:

  • computers
  • large format plotters
  • desk space together with the latest, and archived, journals and publications.

This study centre is open from 8 am until 8 pm.

IT resources

Our IT resource rooms and PC clusters are distributed across the City site, with PCs providing access to:

  • Microsoft Office
  • email
  • web browsing
  • networked file storage
  • high-speed online printing services (with a free printing allowance for each student).

Resource rooms are available 24 hours a day.

Books and library resources

You will have access to an extensive range of books and periodicals that focus on specialist areas within Architecture. The library's OneSearch system also provides access to our:

  • electronic resources
  • journals
  • books.

Within the library there is a liaison librarian who has specialist Architectural subject knowledge and can offer detailed help in finding and using print and electronic resources and also support on things such as Harvard referencing and research skills.
