Taking as a premise Paul Klee’s description of drawing as taking a line for a walk you will begin by doodling in biros, then elaborate by agitating a surface and complete the course with finished drawings. You will gain observational skills by drawing from man-made and natural forms in still life settings. You will also increase your concentration, visualisation and creativity through imagination and automatic drawing. You will study gesture, expression, positive / negative space, hatching, cross-hatching, continuous line and contour-drawing techniques.
Whilst ostensibly a practical course the subject is underpinned by theory and art historical references. The course introduction will include a brief overview of the tradition of drawing. However, the focus will soon shift to contemporary uses of drawing and artists using this medium will be explored and researched.
You will be exploring drawing in the art school atmosphere, with the opportunity to engage with the basic handling of materials and processes through a selection of drawing exercises. You will be encouraged to look closely and respond to your own environment and cultural experience when creating new work. By the end of the course you will have created a portfolio of new, innovative work.
