This course provides a biological understanding of human disease processes, the treatment principles of of such diseases, and the underlying biological disciplines that enable their study and explanation. It has extensive links with BioCity Nottingham, the city's groundbreaking healthcare and biosciences centre. One of the largest innovation and incubation centres of its kind in Europe.

This course provides a biological understanding of human disease processes, the treatment principles of of such diseases, and the underlying biological disciplines that enable their study and explanation. It has extensive links with BioCity Nottingham, the city's groundbreaking healthcare and biosciences centre. One of the largest innovation and incubation centres of its kind in Europe.

Students study modules in Pharmacology and a choice between Business and Bioethics and special topics in Molecular Biology and undertake a six month research project either in the school or another academic or industrial research laboratory in the UK or abroad. Students present a written dissertation and give oral and poster presentations of their project work.

Part-time students study a specialism from one of four modules, chosen from Cellular Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology and Medical Microbiology. They also attend a three day specialist workshop in the second year of the course. The research project covers the second year of the course and is carried out in the specialist area chosen by the part-time student in the laboratory of their employer, subject to the approval of the employer.

  • Research Methods and IT
  • Practical Techniques in Genomics and Proteomics

Optional modules

You can choose to study both:

  • Pharmacology
  • Biology of Disease.

Or one of the above modules plus one of the following eLearning modules

  • Cellular pathology
  • Clinical chemistry
  • Haematology and Transfusion Science
  • Medical microbiology.

You will then carry out your research project.

Performance is assessed by:

  • written assignments
  • computer-aided learning packages
  • dissertation
  • oral presentation
  • laboratory reports
  • formal examinations.
