Module content includes manufacturing, mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering, computer science and technology, management, robotics and emerging technologies such as advanced Web/Internet techniques and sustainable technology, and training in design, engineering and graphics software such as Solidworks, ANSYS, Matlab and Adobe Illustrator.

What will I study?

You will study a selection of cutting-edge subjects recognised by the engineering industry as being in high demand. The course will be delivered as follows:

1. Six taught modules, 20 credits each:

  • Advanced Design and Manufacturing Technology
  • CAE and Internet Technologies
  • Robotics and Emerging Technologies
  • Engineering Management
  • Research Methods
  • Group Interdisciplinary Project.

2. Individual Major Study Project, 60 credits
The individual major project will develop your independent research, innovation and implementation skills, and industrially linked projects are strongly encouraged and supported. The project may be pursued either at this university, or at partner organisations in the UK or overseas.

How will I learn?

The course is delivered through lectures, laboratory classes and project work. You will receive support through your studies from our excellent teaching and technical support staff and have additional access to the University’s Virtual Learning Portal.

The teaching and project work of this course are well supported by extensive and modern resources including:

  • hydraulic and pneumatic laboratory sponsored by Festo
  • machining and manufacturing workshop with a wide range of facilities such as an advanced water jet cutting machine and laser cutting machines
  • various types of CNC machines
  • large number of metal and wood cutting machines
  • welding equipment and highly valuable rapid prototyping machines
  • well equipped laboratories of wide range of subject areas including control lab
  • electronics lab, robotic lab, mechatronics lab, metrology lab and material lab
  • wood, metal and plastics workshops
  • modern CAD/CAM studios.
Company visits

In recent years students have visited a number of companies which have included JCB (one of the world's top three manufacturers of construction equipment) and ZF Great Britain Ltd (a subsidiary of ZF Friedrichshafen AG, the thirteenth largest automotive supplier in the World), and to attend the lectures and seminars organised by professional organisations such as IET. Such arrangements enable the students to see by themselves the industrial implementation of the design and technology they learn in the class room, and to gain the updated knowledge of technology innovation.

How will I be assessed?

Taught modules are assessed by coursework, oral presentations, case studies and projects. The Individual Major Project module involves the design, implementation and reporting of a major research task by thesis.
