This Unit is designed to allow candidates to develop an understanding of database design and the use of advanced features to provide information that is specific or summarised to enhance decision-making. The Unit is primarily intended for candidates moving into managerial positions where the storage, management and reliability of information is increasingly important. Acquiring an appreciation of database management systems, creation of forms, and sophisticated queries will help any manager make the most of relational databases to support their decision-making.

On completion of the Unit the candidate should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced design principles to improve the performance and integrity of a database.
  2. Create a relational database that ensures data is consistent, secure and correct.
  3. Create and use complex queries to manipulate data to aid decision-making.

In order to complete this Unit successfully, you will be required to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in all assessed work.

The materials are provided as web-pages for you to work through online. As you progress through the course materials you will find written explanations of each feature, followed by practical exercises.

You will be supported throughout the course by a specialist Distance Learning Tutor. Your tutor will contact you (via your College email account) within 7-10 working days of receiving your welcome letter and materials. As you progress they will continue to make regular contact to offer support and guidance, usually by e-mail but sometimes by phone, to ensure you are making good progress and to support your learning throughout. Please note that you must be able to study independently through the course materials.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The assessment is undertaken using open book controlled conditions. In order to complete this Unit successfully, you will be required to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in all assessed work.

This course has a credit value of 1 HN Credit at SCQF level 8.

Your Tutor will mark your all your certified assessments. Any re-submissions, known as remediation, will also be directed and remarked by your tutor. Your work will then be cross-marked by an in college subject expert, a process called moderation. It is only then that a result can be sent to the Awarding Body for certification.

A Pass is not final until all crosschecking procedures have been successfully completed. Your pass will be notified to the SQA for certification.

Assessments are booked through the BCD team.

Candidates will have met the knowledge and/or skills contained in IT in Business: Databases (F84X 34).
